High Power Density, Buck-Boost Converter with Dual Interleaved Four-Phase Coupling

A DC-DC, forward Buck-Boost converter using dual interleaving with four-phase switching arms is presented. The dual interleaving consists of two mirrored interphase transformers that take advantage of the common mode voltage resulting in ripple frequency duplication and small common inductance. The produced high-current waveforms reveal virtual ripple reduction at full load, the efficiency and the power density being 98 % and 5.7 kW/kg respectively. The converter fundamental of operation and design assessment are described together with experimental results obtained from a 32 kW prototype.
